We correographed a Star Wars Themed Show that all the kids on the base STARRED in...it was a standing room only crowd and the kids performed like stars. It was an awesome time, and we had a ball. 	Comments: Enjoyed my stay there, sounds like my sister remembers more than I do! Remember fishing off the Coast Guard Pier, we found an old steamer trunk and used it to boat around. I went out by myself once, tide was carrying me out, jumped in the water and swam for shore....watched it go out and eventually go under a cargo ship! We went down to the motor pool one day and borrowed the jeeps and rode around in the motor pool area...Teen Club was great, went to dances every where! Teachers had an 11 week strike! Had a paper route, had my sting ray bike pushing through the snow...more stories as I remember them, ciao!

	Looking For A special pal of mine, Patricia Miller - now deceased - was born at the hospital just 9 days before me in September, 1933. Her mother had a rough time of it and was still there with Pat when I was born and our mothers were in the same room. Pat and her parents also showed up at Ft. Totten '37-39 and went down to Panama with us. Finally, we got back together again in 1950-51 when we both graduated from Western High School in Washington, DC. Pat married a Spanish Army Officer and resided in Spain until her early death. I am still in touch with her older brother (deceased 2010)
	Comments: I was born at the Ft. Totten base hospital Sept. 19, 1933 but at the time my dad was stationed at Ft. Hancock on Sandy Hook, NJ. There was no military hospital at that time at Ft Hancock on Sandy Hook, NJ. The post doctor was prepared to send my mother to Ft. Totten by boat if it appeared there would not be time to get there by car (driving around NY Harbor which my parents did to get there). After a tour of duty in Hawaii (living on the seawall at Ft DeRussy next to Waikiki Beach (tough duty) from 1934-37 we returned to Ft. Totten and I attended school in Bayside before we were shipped off to Panama in Nov. 1939. I remember watching quite large trees blowing down by the parade ground during the Hurricane of '38.

	Comments: My dad was stationed there and we lived on General Berry Drive. We loved living on the base and we would crawl under the fence of the fort to claim the prison rooms as our clubhouses. Using a clothes trunk, we tied a rope to one of the truck handles, the other to a rock on the shore and then sat in it while we floated out into Little Neck Bay! The winter we moved there, folks got stranded on the Cross Island Parkway and one of our neighbors drove a bus to pick folks up, brought them to the base theater, while others brought food to them from the commissary. We kids found government rations; sledded down Devils Hill in the winter; snuck into the old buildings to explore; walked along Shore Road on top of the stone wall-it was a kids dream!!

	Comments: I was briefly stationed at Fort Totten in late summer, 1957, then assigned to a detachment attached to the fort on the end of Long Island--Camp Hero. Camp Hero had had artillery guarding the south shore of L.!. and the seaways leading to NYC during WW II. Mostly we were closing Camp Hero down.

	Looking For Any of the kids that we hung out with. I was in little league. I was an altar boy and I was a novice photographer developing my own photos at the hobby shop while only 8 years old. My sister Liz was 5 years older than me. There were 6 kids in the family.
	Comments: I almost drowned in Little Neck Bay and a Fireman pulled me out of the frozen water in winter when somebodies dingy got loose and a few of my friends tried to retrieve it but chickened out and left me in the boat. Eventually I jumped out also and found that you can't breath in freezing water.

	Comments: I was assigned to Fort Totten in 1971 as the commanding officer of the US Army Courier Station New York, a part of the Armed Forces Courier Service [ARFCOS]. Our mission was to provide courier escort for classified material to be delivered and picked-up from a multitude of government organizations in New York city, Long Island, parts of New Jersey, all of New York state, NH, Vermont, and Ottawa Canada. We also dispatched material to Washington, DC and London, UK. Our station was located in the former base Fire Station. It was located across from the Post Exchange and next to the Enlisted barracks. I had one officer, two or three NCOs and three or four enlisted men in the command. In 1973 was as re-assigned to Fort Hamilton, NY. Since I was a bachelor and not eligible for base housing [the post BOQ was not at all pleasing] I rented an appartment just up from the post gate. I thourghly enjoyed my assignment and my tour at Ft. Totten, and living in Bayside, although I was a true Texan and Yankees were foreign people!

Miss the Fort Totten Days, the huge pool there and catching frogs at the pond, listening to Mets games by sitting the front gate, fishing at the Coast Guard station. Totten...the best place to grow up on Earth!!! Her dad did not like NY & retired from the Army when his 20 yrs. came up. So, they moved from Ft. Totten to Woodbridge, VA. We remained friends thru old fashion snail mail letter writing until about a decade later when my dad retired & we moved to Woodbridge, VA also. We immediately became inseparable again. 	Comments: We lived on Gen. Berry Drive - A side.., a few houses down from the weather station. I remember getting to help the guy send the weather balloon off; looking for bullets in the old fort and having to take that creepy long bike ride down the tunnel with NO lights at all; watching the movie "It's Alive" at the base theater and then having my brother, Charlie and the Castro brothers take off and leave me to get home alone; hanging out at the picnic table across the street from our house, everyone hung out there; the bus stop at the top of the hill; May Day at school; sneaking out at night - heading over to the church dumpster to find TONS of new toys inside..there had to have been the entire side A in that dumpster - it was awesome, until my dad came looking for us; mud fights with Rachel- until one landed in my mouth (ack); walking along the bay; too many more memories to list at this time. My brother Tom Brissette is in Flint, Mich; where he has been since my dad retired. Nothing but great memories !!! There should be a reunion..

I remember sneaking into the old fort, finding bullets in the sand, adult swim at the pool, cheerleading (still have my trophy), the teen club, Always & Forever as the last song at dances, Girl Scouts at the Strickers, Cadet meetings in the church basement & I could go on & on. 	Comments: My dad was a army cook and baker. I remember my first morning at Fort Totten the cannon went off and I ran to my parents room to tell they were back and bombing us. I went to pre-kindergarten at the YMCA. Dad was the hospital cook then post cook (hated to cook for the officers) but I do remember him making and decorating a many tiered wedding cake for an officer. I Made my first holy communion on may 8th 1949 a year early as Father Lambert was going overseas and had never given first holy communion. Dad eventually retired and ran the commissary for 3 or 4 years. I Worked there on weekends. Arlene a (a soldiers wife) AND I would go to Jackie Robinsons house in ST.Albans to get baseball tickets that Jackie paid for out of his own pocket for the African American soldiers Dad would cook the food and pay for my and Arlenes ticket. 	Comments: I wouldn't trade growing up on Fort Totten for any other place. It was truly an amazing place to grow up. Pool parties were the best. Stories of haunted houses, cub scouts, karate classes, chilling by the water, spending summer days riding bikes all over the fort with friends. Those are fond memories.

The house was a duplex and those rooms were next to each other. I remember swimming the the pool that was located on the main parade field. What a pretty place Fort Totten was.

	Comments: Dad was stationed here after Germany and we all use to go down to the old fort until the MPs ran us off then we would go back again. Pool was a big thing in the summer and bagging grocery's at the commeries on Sat to make extra money and the Teen Bowling league was great on Friday's if I remember correctly. Me and Tony use to race our bikes around the housing area at night to see who had the fast time he was one big guy had saddlebags on his bike LOL.

They played down in the basement of the two story houses. Never thought I would actually miss my childhood. I loved venturing into the old fort and investigating the old buildings. And especially Devils Hill. I was just telling my husband and daughter about that hill when it snows.
